FAQs

Do you offer delivery?

No, all products must be purchased in store. Pastries and, to a lesser extent, bread, do not travel well. We do not wish to compromise on quality by offering a delivery service.

Do you have any gluten free options?

No. We love flour and gluten, and our focus will always be on gluten containing products. Even if we did make something which doesn’t contain gluten, which we occasionally do, we work in a tiny space and cannot guarantee against any cross-contamination.

Do you make anything that’s vegan?

We are not a vegan bakery. We also love butter, and all our pastries contain lots of premium cultured butter from the Edinburgh Butter Company. Our mission is to use the best local ingredients, and unfortunately plant based “butters”, full of oils and additives, do not fit that bill.

However, all our bread is vegan (unless otherwise stated), and we always try to have one vegan offering on the counter. Right now, it’s an Anzac cookie.

Are you a Maltese bakery?

Nope! Hobz does indeed mean bread in Maltese, and the owner (hi, it’s me) was born and raised there. I initially started Hobz as a side project, and my focus was on making good naturally leavened bread. I didn’t have any notion of how the brand would grow to what it is today. We do not make pastizzi or so-called ‘Maltese bread’. We are our own bakery, drawing inspiration from every culture and baking tradition.

Does the menu change?

Yes, all the time. We have a few staples that we continuously work on and adapt, but don’t really ever take off the menu, but we also introduce new breads and pastries all the time. We do work with whatever’s in season, especially fruit, and like to test out new ideas whenever the mood strikes. Doing so involves lots of failures, but experimenting will always be our goal. Don’t expect a strawberry pastry in the dead of winter!
